Luther: The Fallen Sun Movie Review
One Word Review Utterly shocking film.
Quick Review
I should note that I have not actually watched the series!
However, despite the fact that Idris Elba will likely reprise his iconic role, this film's lackluster plot, predictable story, and wasted potential are likely to disappoint.
The grizzled, determined detective played by Idris Elba has been inserted into a disjointed standalone film.
Like the bizarre haystack of fake hair they pinned on Andy Serkis's head to make him look sinister, the story lacks interest and substance.
Because it reuses numerous elements from numerous other films, the film lacks originality and intrigue.
The entire film has the impression of being a jumbled amalgam of James Bond, Saw, Batman (primarily), and Sherlock Holmes!
There is even a small, subtle Easter egg in which Idris Elba is offered a vodka martini, but he chooses to drink water instead—fizzy water, I should add—making the movie feel more like a superhero movie than a gritty crime thriller!
Elba plays Luther in a scene where he looks at his "iconic" trench coat as if it were his Batsuit or something.
Then it cuts right to him standing on a big building and looking out over the city like he is a watchful protector, a silent guardian, a Dark Knight... My biggest problem with the movie is that it doesn't really look like a movie at all?
Because it's all episodic, it still feels like a 6- to 8-episode series.
The only saving grace of this film is Idris Elba's performance, which is charismatic and compelling despite the weak material. The beginning of the film is also completely rushed, giving the impression that certain scenes are missing from the entirety of the film.
With subtlety and intensity, he conveys Luther's inner turmoil and determination.
Yet, tragically, even he can't hoist this film over it's average quality…
Notwithstanding, Andy Serkis is likewise another champion as the off the wall chronic executioner that Luther should capture!
Even though Serkis is channeling his inner Joker, he still manages to give a rather creepy performance despite wearing a wig that is questionable and distracting.
The issue, on the other hand, is how ridiculously outrageous his evil plan is. According to what I understand, the original Luther series is known for its grounded tone; however, there are so many instances in this movie where it feels completely out of place!
Overall, Idris Elba is the one who keeps you interested, even though the ending may be over the top!
If you want to give Luther The Fallen Sun a shot, you don't have to watch all five seasons of the Luther series, but you might find that you want to afterward....
Truly felt like it was composed by a 12yr old, who's eaten a lot of sugar, subsequent to watching Batman, James Bond, Quietness of the Sheep, Saw and Along came a Bug.. blend that in with the past-pattern Scandi-Shows and blast, you have a horrible film, with more plot openings, film buzzwords and scenes with unthinkable groupings that came from or go no place.
I envision this was written in a comparable climate to Del Kid and Rodney's 'There's a Rhino free in the City' or 'The Island of Death'
'Idris Elba? Now you sound like a business mogul!'
10 minutes between London and Dover?
Why didn't the contents of his cell burn?
Large House in the Middle of Nothingness?
Where did the "Hackers" who filled the warehouse go?
No problem, 20 prisoners and 30 riot police. Yet, 1 moderately aged man?
On a Kerosene fire, water?
Hypothermia?
On a helicopter, divers?
Real Snow?
Sheer number and state of casualties (all looked later)?
Mannequins with changing skin tones?
Years of planning a multimillion-dollar scheme, undone by his teeth grinding?
It was absurd that he was able to deduce the plot and motive from virtually nothing.
The same result could be produced by combining 200 clips from any of the aforementioned films with a few references to The Shining, American Werewolf in London, Running Man, or in fact any film from the past forty years.
The class of Andy Serkis and Idris Elba stood out, but I bet neither of them will include this on their resumes!
Also, please do not make a sequel to "Chief,"
