The Pope's Exorcist (2023) #Movie Review
Film that captivates and entertains. Although not quite as frightening as The Exorcist (1973), it is quite creepy. The primary youngster entertainer Peter DeSouza-Feighoney gives a splendid, crude and carnal exhibition. The special effects are top-notch without overdoing the gore, and there are moments of thoughtful humor that provide balance. The pace is good and tension builds slowly.
The books written by a real-life priest about alleged exorcisms serve as the basis for the film. It goes without saying that things are made more complicated and changed for the sake of entertainment, but the idea that some parts might have been taken from real life adds to the overall creepiness and makes you wonder. This movie doesn't do anything groundbreaking in the genre, but its tight plot and solid scares keep you hooked all the way through. The third act as a whole is very exciting. As always, Russell Crowe effortlessly carries the movie. As usual, Russel Crowe shines, but the writing is sluggish and could have been better. The rest of the cast did a great job throughout, but it could have been a little bit better.
A well rounded horror film.
